Dr. Katherine Gast, MD is a fellowship-trained plastic surgeon who specializes in gender-affirming Phalloplasty surgery. Dr. Gast is the Medical Director of the UW Health Comprehensive Gender Services Program in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Gast offers RFF and ALT Phalloplasty, as well as ALT/RFF combined (aka composite) Phalloplasty. Dr. Gast has been working with trans patients for more than 5 years.

Dr. Gast received her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 2010. She also completed her plastic surgery residency at U of M in 2016, which gave her the opportunity to work under Dr. William Kuzon, who has been performing gender surgeries since the early '90s. The following year, Dr. Gast completed the world-class Subspecialty Fellowship in Gender Affirming Surgery and Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction in Ghent, Belgium.

Dr. Gast performs RFF and ALT Phalloplasty, as well as RFF/ALT combined or composite Phalloplasty. These procedures are done with a team that includes a urologist and gynecologist to remove the vagina (Vaginectomy) and create a scrotum from the labia majora (Scrotoplasty.) Scrotal and/or erectile implants can be put in about 1 year after the initial Phalloplasty.

Surgery Requirements
Dr. Gast is a member of WPATH and follows WPATH guidelines for surgery:

  • You will need to provide two referrals from qualified mental health professionals for Phalloplasty.
  • A letter from your hormone specialist stating you have been on 12 months of continuous hormones for Phalloplasty, unless clinically contraindicated.
