Dr. Michael Safir, MD is a urologist affiliated with Align Surgical Associates in Los Angeles who specializes in the trans masculine bottom surgery. Dr. Safir is board-certified by the American Board of Urology and has subspecialty certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPM-RS). He completed two year-long fellowships in Male and Female Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery, making him one of the few urologists in the world with individual fellowship training and experience in both male and female genital reconstruction. Dr. Safir's training, urology experience plus five years of performing Phalloplasty at one of the world's highest volume gender surgery centers have made him a popular Phalloplasty surgeon.
Dr. Safir has performed more than 250 Phalloplasty surgeries. He offers two types of microsurgical Phalloplasty: Radial Forearm Flap (RFF) Phalloplasty and Anterolateral Thigh (ALT) Phalloplasty. Vaginectomy, Urethral Lengthening, Glansplasty, Scrotoplasty, and Testicular and Penile Implants are all optional. Dr. Safir uses Coloplast implants.
Surgery Requirements
Dr. Safir is a member of WPATH and follows WPATH guidelines for surgery. You will need to provide two referrals from qualified mental health professionals, and a letter from your hormone specialist stating you have been on 12 months of continuous hormones, unless clinically contraindicated.
Financing & Insurance
Dr. Safir accepts insurance from a large number of insurance companies, and also accepts most managed Medi-Cal plans. Medicare is not accepted.
Booking a Consultation
Dr. Safir is available for phone or in-person consultations in Los Angeles for a fee of $200. An in-person consultation is not required for booking a surgery date.
