Dr. Dev Gurjala, MD is a Phalloplasty surgeon in San Francisco who performed gender surgery, microsurgery, and general reconstructive and aesthetic surgery for five years in the Kaiser Permanente system before joining Align Surgical Associates in 2019. Dr. Gurjala works exclusively with transgender and non-binary patients.
Dr. Gurjala performs ALT Phalloplasty, which uses the Anterolateral Thigh (ALT) Flap to create an aesthetically satisfactory phallus that can be used for sexual intercourse (with an erectile implant) and to urinate while standing. Using the ALT donor site results in a scar that is concealable with pants or shorts, and generally provides good sensation and a good skin color match. For those who have very thin arms, ALT can provide a more appropriate phallus girth compared to RFF Phalloplasty. It is best suited to patients who have lean thighs with a low amount of sub-cutaneous fat.
Dr. Gurjala is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He completed fellowship training in Microsurgery at Stanford University. He served as a Research Fellow at Northwestern's Laboratory for Wound Repair and Regenerative Medicine. In addition to his medical degree and undergraduate degree in Neurobiology and Cognitive Science, Dr. Gurjala also has a Master of Science in Engineering Design and Innovation. He is a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH).
Surgery Requirements
For Phalloplasty, patients are required to supply two letters of support from mental health therapists, and a letter from your primary care physician or endocrinologist; must have been living in your desired gender for at least a year; must have been taking hormones for a year; and must demonstrate that they have adequate support from family and their work community.
