Dr. Christopher McClung

Compassionate Phalloplasty Surgeon in Ohio

Dr. Christopher McClung, MD is a board-certified urologist in Ohio who specializes in bottom surgeries including Phalloplasty. His introduction to the field of gender surgery came through helping patients who had bottom surgery elsewhere and subsequently developed complications such as fistulas and strictures. Dr. McClung's practice is now entirely devoted to gender affirming surgical care, from primary Phalloplasty and follow-up through to completion.

After his advanced fellowship training in urologic reconstruction at the University of Washington in Seattle, Dr. McClung's clinical work focused on reconstructive surgeries for patients with congenital anomalies and trauma injuries of the genitourinary system. This expertise in complex reconstructions uniquely positioned him to perform gender-affirming genital surgeries.

Dr. McClung is a member of the American Urological Association and the Genitourinary Reconstruction Society.

Dr. McClung performs RFF, ALT and MLD Phalloplasty. The radial forearm flap (RFF) has a greater density of sensory receptors compared to other flaps and thus provides optimal sensation. The RFF flap also tends to have a good blood supply and reliably produces a phallus with an appropriate girth compared to other flaps.

Dr. McClung performs Phalloplasty over two stages, with the first including flap harvest, creation of the phallus and Glansplasty, along with Vaginectomy (removal of vaginal lining and closure of the vagina), Urethroplasty (urethral lengthening to tip of penis to enable standing urination) and Scrotoplasty (creation of a scrotum using labial tissue). Stage 2 includes insertion of testicular and penile implants. A penile implant provides erectile function that is suitable for penetrative intercourse. Dr. McClung uses Coloplast and Alpha Aesthetics implants.

Dr. McClung works closely with plastic/microsurgeon Dr. Santosh Kale to perform Phalloplasty.

Phalloplasty Risks and Complications

All surgeries carry the risk of complications and some patients may require surgical revisions that can add additional stages. In general, complications can include infection, bleeding, blood clots, tissue necrosis, pain, urethral fistula or stricture, wound separation, and bladder or rectal injury. Dr. McClung has the expertise to manage complications, including complex urinary issues.
